Why is the 2020 Grand Chess Tour canceled?

Unfortunately due to the global pandemic known as COVID-19, the Grand Chess Tour feels it is in the best interest of all parties involved to cancel the 2020 season. The GCT board of directors reached this decision in collaboration with partners and sponsors based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Will there be a Grand Chess Tour in 2021?

Yes, the GCT sponsors and partners, including Superbet Group and Superbet Foundation, Vivendi SA, Colliers International and the Saint Louis Chess Club have confirmed their commitment and participation for the 2021 season.

Will any of the 2020 Grand Chess Tour events still occur?

No, unfortunately all 2020 GCT events are canceled but the Saint Louis Chess Club is planning to host the following events that will be independent of GCT: Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, Sinquefield Cup and Champions Showdown: Chess 9LX. These events are currently scheduled for August 24 - September 14, 2020.

Is it possible that the Saint Louis tournaments will also be canceled?

We hope for the best global outcome possible for the COVID-19 pandemic. While these events are currently confirmed, the Saint Louis Chess Club will await further developments and recommendations from medical and civic authorities before determining the fate of the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, Sinquefield Cup and Champions Showdown: Chess9LX.
