The Grand Chess Tour Returns in 2022 with $1.275M in Prizes and a New Event in Warsaw, Poland

The Grand Chess Tour continues to host the world’s best around the globe

 

Saint Louis, MO, July 11, 2021 - The GCT is proud to announce five events for the 2022 tour, including a new event in Warsaw, Poland. Players will compete throughout the season for $1.275 million in prizes. 

“When we created the Grand Chess Tour, we promised it would be unlike anything else, that we would continue to grow and expand, and to show chess in the way it’s meant to be played,” said legendary 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, the driving force behind the Grand Chess Tour. “2022 promises to be another great year on the tour for players and fans alike.” 

The tour will once again consist of two classical and three rapid & blitz events between May and September. The 2022 season will kick off in Bucharest, Romania with the Superbet Chess Classic. Players will continue to battle it out across Europe before heading west to Saint Louis, USA for the second classical event, the Sinquefield Cup.

The 2022 Grand Chess Tour season will include:

  1. Superbet Chess Classic Romania: May 3 - 15, Bucharest, Romania
  2. Paris Grand Chess Tour Rapid & Blitz: May 17-24, Paris, France
  3. Super United Croatia Grand Chess Tour Rapid & Blitz: July 19-26, Zagreb, Croatia
  4. Superbet Warsaw Rapid & Blitz: August 24-30, Warsaw, Poland 
  5. Sinquefield Cup: September 1-15, Saint Louis, USA

“The GCT worked in cooperation with FIDE to ensure no scheduling conflicts among the top world events, Including the FIDE Grand Prix qualifiers, Candidates tournament, World Team Championship and the World Chess Olympiad.”, said GCT Executive Director Michael Khodarkovsky.

The full format and qualification criteria of the 2022 Grand Chess Tour will be announced in the coming months.
